Our History
A Legacy of Service and Hospitality
Discover the rich history of Munger Inn, a place where dedication and hard work have shaped a legacy. Established in 1954 by Willard and Martha Munger, the inn began as the “Duluth Zoo” Motel. The Munger family’s relentless efforts and commitment to their community led to the motel’s success and eventual transformation into the renowned Willard Munger Inn.
The inn’s journey reflects Willard Munger’s dedication not only to his family business but also to his service as a Minnesota State Representative from 1954 to 1999. Known for his pioneering environmental laws and advocacy, Willard earned the nickname “Mr. Environment.” His work led to significant improvements in local environmental conditions, including the creation of the Willard Munger State Trail and the cleanup of the St. Louis River.
Over the years, the inn evolved with the addition of new wings and amenities. In 1993, the establishment was renamed to honor Willard Munger Sr. by his son, Willard Jr. The inn now serves as a cherished destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with updated amenities and a rustic lounge area featuring a small museum dedicated to Willard’s progressive politics.
